“Massaging People who have Dementia” is a ground-breaking 1 day training course which will give you the tools to set up a positive, relationship with a client who has dementia. The course is for people who are already qualified in massage or hands on therapies, but wish to advance their skills, and build on their current knowledge to give them the confidence to practice more proficiently in this field.
The course will dispel some of the myths around dementia as well as celebrate the positive aspects. Understanding your client or the person you care for equips you better to give them a massage treatment so they will benefit for longer.

Introduction
Although designed to take students up to the entry level required for our main Sports and Remedial Massage Diploma course, this workshop is open to anyone wanting to develop basic hands-on skills in general massage, which can be used on a recreational level with friends and family.
For existing massage therapists, this course is CPD accredited and offers the opportunity for on-going development, revision or simply confidence boosting for individuals who’s massage skills are in need of updating.
The weekend is very hand-on and you will learn how to apply good, safe and effective massage techniques over all the main areas of the body.
Some of the techniques covered on this 2 day course are:-
How to prepare your work area: cleanliness, hygiene, towel management, client comfort and modesty, use of bolsters, cushions, etc.
Classic massage strokes including: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, hand techniques
Working posture, safety with couch, correct set height, etc.
A massage routine covering the whole body, including legs, arms, neck & shoulders, face and abdomen.
Course Requirements
No previous massage experience is required to attend this course; however, a genuine desire to learn the art of effective massage for friends and family is desirable, or this course can be used as a pre-entry requirement for our BTEC Level 5 Sports & remedial Massage Diploma course.
This course is also CPD awarded for existing qualified massage therapists looking to update their skills or refresh their technique and style.

ITEC Unit 347 – Knowledge of Less Common Therapies for Complementary Therapies

Course Requirements
Where possible, it is recommended that candidates have achieved a level of qualification equivalent to 5 GCSEs at Grades A - C; however The School of Natural Therapies and ITEC will make exemptions for foreign and UK students with equivalent qualifications or adult returners with experience of the workplace.

1. A certificate from the Institute of Sports & Remedial Massage (ISRM)
2. A BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Sports & Remedial Massage

Course Structure
The course is made up of 10 weekend workshops (10:00 am to 5:00pm on Saturdays & Sundays) 20 days in total.
There is an additional examination day.
Home study and practice is required between the monthly workshops, allowing plenty of time to practice and gain real experience of the techniques learned before new ones are introduced. As the course develops, students can relate the new information and techniques with the clinical experience they have already gained. The early part of the course becomes a solid foundation for the advanced techniques and subjects covered later.

This comprises of home study based around four written assignments which form part of the course assessment. A minimum of 100 hours study is expected for the student to successfully complete the coursework.
The weekend workshops consist of approximately 25% theory and 75% practical, and there is a separate examination day, totalling 145 hours of direct contact time.
All students will be expected to study the Anatomy & Physiology part of this course, as subjects presented during this course element are essential to sports and remedial massage.
Student insurance is required for you to practice outside of the class and this can be obtained through the ISRM; we will provide details of this during the course.
Practice
It is vitally important that students practice between the weekends. To encourage this, students will receive a logbook in which to record 100 practice treatments and this forms part of the course assessment. Two case studies are required towards the end of the course. For home practice, a student is expected to spend about 100 hours.
Course Requirements
4 GCSE's and 1 'A' level, or similar academic qualification (Desirable).
An accredited body massage qualification (ITEC, VTCT or equivalent Level 3 qualification) or a School of Natural Therapies ‘Introductory Massage*’ certificate.
An active involvement in some sport, dance or exercise activity.
*Students who do not hold a recognised massage qualification in Massage/Anatomy & Physiology, are invited to apply for this course, providing they go some way towards meeting the academic requirements as listed above; in addition, they will be required to attend the Schools Introductory Massage Weekend Course at our Clapham venue. There are two weekend date options for the 2010 intake.
Exam Module
Examination & Assessment
The final examination takes place 2 weeks after the final weekend. It consists of 1 theory paper and 1 practical, supported by 3 practical assessments taken during the course.
In accordance with our equal opportunities policy, we do try to make special arrangements for people with learning difficulties wherever possible. We also try to make the exam process a low-stress as possible. The School has a formal appeals procedure if a student wishes to dispute any mark they receive.

Total £2,499.00
Deposit £499.00 (£249.00 holding deposit at time of booking + £250.00, 6wks before course starts).
Balance £2,000 payable by first day of course, or by 10 instalments of £200.
Fees include: BTEC registration, exams, certification and one-year's student membership of the ISRM.

After Qualification
These qualifications are nationally recognised and will enable you to practice as a professional sport & remedial massage practitioner, and obtain full comprehensive insurance cover. It also entitles you to become a full member of the ISRM, as well as other professional sports bodies.
Opportunities also exist in many other fields of sport and massage, such as:
Gyms, sports clubs, etc
Referrals from other practitioners and professionals, such as Physiotherapists, Osteopaths.

London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG)
Volunteers at the Games
Volunteers are at the core of the Games and essential to all the functional areas that make up this global festival of sport. Information about the recruitment of up to 70,000 volunteers will be found on www.london2012.com from summer 2010, but it will be worthwhile for interested sports massage practitioners to be aware of what might be expected of volunteers and whether they have the desire and attributes required to volunteer as a sports massage practitioner.
Olympic and Paralympic Medical Services There will be three Olympic and Paralympic Villages and five sites for the football venues (spread around Great Britain). The 26 sports will compete in 34 venues at the Olympics and 21 venues at the Paralympics. There will be 10,500 athletes at the Olympic Games and 4,200 athletes at the Paralympic Games coming from 205 and 147 countries respectively. The Olympic Games last for 17 days and the Paralympic Games for 11 days with each Games having a two week build up prior to the Opening Ceremony when medical services have to be provided; over two months in total.
Physical Therapy Services
Physical therapy encompasses chiropractic, osteopathy, physiotherapy and sports massage. A physical therapy service will be provided at the main Polyclinic in the Olympic Village (in East London), at the smaller Polyclinics at Royal Holloway (rowing and canoeing) and Weymouth (sailing) as well as at all the competition venues and some training venues. Working within their scope of practice, sports massage practitioners will use their knowledge, skills and experience to provide pre-event and post-event sports massage services to athletes. It is essential that volunteers for sports massage are aware of the importance of working within an interdisciplinary team, of utilising the clinical judgements of others and of using referrals to other disciplines when necessary.
Depending on the sport and venue, some sports massage practitioners may be based in the Athlete Medical Centres at the competition venues. The sports massage practitioners within the Village Polyclinics will work closely with other medical professionals, including chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists. The detailed provision of these services is already being planned by the Physical Therapy Work stream, led by Lynn Booth.
All short-listed applicants will be interviewed, and their skills and experience will determine success and help determine at which venues (or Polyclinic) they are most appropriately based. At LOCOG we are looking for sports massage practitioners with sport specific experience. Experience of looking after elite athletes will be of particular value. By identifying and selecting volunteers early, LOCOG will identify any potential gaps in sport specific cover or experience. Sports massage practitioners selected as volunteers have the chance to gain further relevant experience and arrange leave and cover from their employer well before the Games.
The Olympic and Paralympics Games are truly inspirational and this really is a unique opportunity for sports massage practitioners to volunteer to be part of it and to promote the expertise available in the UK. Medical volunteers bring unique and special skills which will enable London to host a safe, successful and inspirational Olympic and Paralympic Games. We need your help to do that.
All sports massage practitioners will need to volunteer for at least ten days. It may be possible to divide this time into two 5 day periods, but not into any smaller units. Their time will need to be flexible to cover the busiest periods and variable competition schedule. Sports massage practitioners who can commit to more than the basic 10 days will be much appreciated. All volunteers will be expected to attend test events in 2011 and training days in the run up to the Games. There is no remuneration or honorarium for volunteers but they will receive a volunteer uniform, a meal when on duty and free local transport. Volunteers are expected to find and pay for their own accommodation whilst working at the Games.

Holder of a massage qualification equivalent to National Framework Level 4 (D521)* or a
Minimum of 4 years working full-time in elite or professional sport
Suitable professional liability insurance to a minimum of £2 million
3 years qualified at the time of application (2010)
Holder of a current basic first aid in sport or life support qualification
Have experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
By 2012, have 4 years experience of working in a musculoskeletal field or have experience of working in a Games-related discipline i.e. neurology / amputee rehabilitation
Excellent team worker, and good communicator
Knowledge of the World Anti-Doping Agency policy

By 2012, have experience of working in a training and / or competitive sporting environment for a minimum of 3 years.

Is there anything more debilitating than shoulder pain? That deep, nagging discomfort that just won’t shift, no matter what. This common complaint leaves many therapists perplexed and many clients achieving only temporary relief.
In this two day course we will examine some of the many cases of shoulder pain and learn new techniques that might help deal with the discomfort and help prevent recurrence. Along with the lower back it is an area where relief can be felt most immediately.

The ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Massage, Anatomy & Physiology is a fast track, intensive course of study designed for those wishing to build the base from which to develop a career in alternative therapies. The course is run by enthusiastic, dedicated ITEC professionals who teach not because they can do but because they love to. The Diploma is comprised of seven independent units or modules including:
ITEC Unit 340 Massage for Complementary Therapies
Students will learn how to evaluate contraindications or cautions that may restrict or prevent treatment, deliver an effective massage treatment in a safe, hygienic and professional manner.
Areas of study include:
How to prepare for a body massage treatment, in a safe, comfortable work area, in line with current legislation & working practice requirements
Through effective client consultation, learn how to respond to any presenting contra-indications and provide a safe, appropriate and comfortable massage treatment as appropriate for the individual client.
The identification of important body surface landmarks, such as muscles and bones
The principles of Holistic/Therapeutic Body Massage
Guidance on how to develop a massage routine for each individual client
Development of a holistic approach - treating the 'mind, body and spirit'
The correct application of massage techniques and use of body posture/mechanics by the therapist, in order to prevent mechanical injuries
The benefits of massage on a physical level
Students will be expected to show evidence of 12 treatments in the form of case studies - culminating in a practical assessment from a visiting ITEC examiner.

Introduction
On this one day course, Sarah will teach you how to perform a body cleansing treatment using Jurlique’s amazing organic products.
