Vagus Nerve Regulation Course

Develop a practical understanding of the autonomic nervous system and vagus nerve regulation. This 1-day CPD workshop is designed for therapists and wellbeing practitioners.

Course Overview

This 1-day Vagus Nerve Regulation Techniques Workshop provides a practical and evidence-informed introduction to understanding and supporting the autonomic nervous system through vagus nerve regulation.

Designed for bodyworkers, manual therapists, talking therapists, counsellors, coaches, movement professionals, and wellbeing practitioners, this workshop explores the essential role of the vagus nerve in stress regulation, emotional wellbeing, recovery, resilience, and overall health.

Participants will gain an understanding of Polyvagal Theory and how the autonomic nervous system influences our perception of safety, connection, threat, and recovery. The workshop will explore how nervous system dysregulation can present in clients, affecting physical symptoms such as pain, tension, fatigue, digestive disturbances, and poor recovery, as well as emotional experiences including anxiety, overwhelm, emotional reactivity, and shutdown.

Through a combination of theory, demonstrations, and practical exercises, participants will learn how to recognise signs of healthy vagal tone and identify indicators that a client may be experiencing autonomic nervous system dysregulation.

A range of simple yet highly effective vagus nerve regulation techniques will be taught, enabling practitioners to integrate these tools into their existing practice and provide clients with practical strategies to support long-term wellbeing between sessions.

This workshop offers an accessible and practical approach to nervous system regulation, providing valuable skills that can be applied across a wide range of therapeutic settings.

Why Vagus Nerve Regulation Matters

Understanding Safety and Survival Responses: Learn how the autonomic nervous system constantly evaluates safety and threat, influencing both physical and emotional health.

Recognising Dysregulation: Develop the ability to identify signs that a client may be experiencing nervous system dysregulation and understand how this may be contributing to their symptoms and presentation.

Supporting Resilience and Recovery: Explore practical techniques that can help improve vagal tone, enhance adaptability, and support the body’s natural ability to recover from stress.

Empowering Clients Between Sessions: Equip clients with simple, effective self-regulation strategies that encourage greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, and long-term wellbeing.

Course Structure

Throughout the day, participants will explore the science behind vagus nerve regulation and gain a practical understanding of how the autonomic nervous system influences health, behaviour, movement, emotions, and recovery.

We will examine both the direct and indirect ways the vagus nerve can affect the body, including its influence on stress responses, muscle tension, inflammation, digestion, breathing patterns, recovery capacity, emotional regulation, and overall resilience.

We will examine the principles of Polyvagal Theory, explore the different autonomic states, and discuss how to recognise when a nervous system is regulated, dysregulated, mobilised, or shut down.

Participants will learn observational and practical assessment skills that can help identify common signs of nervous system imbalance and understand how these patterns may present in clients.

The workshop will then focus on a range of practical regulation techniques designed to support vagal tone and autonomic balance. Participants will have the opportunity to experience and practise these techniques first-hand, gaining tools that can be incorporated into treatment sessions, therapeutic conversations, movement practices, and client aftercare programmes.

By the end of the day, participants will have a greater understanding of how to recognise a nervous system seeking safety and practical ways to help guide it towards regulation, resilience, and improved wellbeing.

  • Understand the anatomy and function of the vagus nerve and its role within the autonomic nervous system
  • Gain a practical understanding of Polyvagal Theory and its application within therapeutic practice
  • Learn how to recognise signs of healthy vagal tone and identify common indicators of nervous system dysregulation
  • Understand how stress, trauma, emotions, and life experiences can influence autonomic nervous system function
  • Learn a variety of practical vagus nerve regulation exercises and techniques
  • Develop confidence in integrating nervous system regulation strategies into client sessions
  • Gain effective self-care and aftercare tools that can be shared with clients to support ongoing regulation and resilience

Assessment
