Recover, Release, Restore: A Guide to Myofascial Release and Vagus Nerve Regulation

Myofascial release course students

At the School of Natural Therapies, we recently ran our Myofascial Release Course – a fully booked, two-day workshop exploring the science and practice of fascia release combined with vagus nerve regulation. Led by our experienced tutor, Claire McCarthy, the course was so positively received that we have already released new dates for November.

This guide will take you through what Myofascial Release is, why the vagus nerve matters, and the outcomes participants experienced on this transformative training.

What Is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a gentle, hands-on therapy that focuses on fascia – the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs. When fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can cause pain, limited mobility, and imbalance throughout the body.

MFR techniques help to:

  • Improve mobility and flexibility
  • Reduce muscle tension and discomfort
  • Restore balance and homeostasis
  • Support recovery from injury or overuse

The therapy is increasingly popular among massage and bodywork professionals who want to expand their toolkit for client recovery and overall well-being.

Why the Vagus Nerve Matters for Muscle Health

A unique component of our course is the focus on vagus nerve regulation, which plays a pivotal role in both muscular function and range of motion. The vagus nerve influences:

  • Nervous System Regulation: calming the body after stress and supporting muscle relaxation.
  • Circulation: promoting blood flow for oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscles.
  • Inflammation Reduction: helping ease soreness, stiffness, and swelling.
  • Muscle Tone Regulation: balancing autonomic nervous system responses to optimise function and mobility.

By integrating vagal tone techniques with myofascial work, therapists can achieve long-lasting results for clients, addressing not just symptoms but the underlying nervous system balance.

A Student’s Perspective

The response to this training has been overwhelmingly positive. Here’s what one recent student, Judith Godby, shared:

“I cannot recommend the Myofascial Release training with Claire McCarthy highly enough! Claire is an exceptional teacher, knowledgeable, intuitive and incredibly supportive. Her passion for MFR is evident in every aspect of her training. She creates a learning environment that is welcoming, empowering and deeply grounded in experience… The training was not only educational but also healing and inspiring on a personal level. I left feeling more connected to my work, more aligned in my body and deeply excited to bring what I have learned to my clients.”

Feedback like this highlights not only the depth of the course content but also the transformative effect it has on therapists themselves – professionally and personally.

Why Therapists Are Choosing This Training

For massage therapists, bodyworkers, and wellness professionals, this course offers:

  • Evidence-based techniques grounded in anatomy and physiology
  • Hands-on practice in small, supportive groups
  • Expert tuition from an experienced practitioner and educator
  • Practical tools you can use immediately with clients

It also complements other specialist training such as our Advanced Deep Tissue Massage CPD Course and Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) CPD Course, making it a valuable addition to your professional development pathway.
